Graduate School of Health Management

Message from the Dean

There has been a growing interest in our rapidly ageing society, the low birth rate, teaching children about health and nutrition, and the role of nutrition in preventing and treating middle age-related disease.

The Graduate School of Health Management comprises nutritional science which mainly investigates food in terms of nutrition and health science in regard to applying nutrition to medical care. In both of these areas the Department aims to train highly specialized professionals who can contribute to health advancements, disease prevention and treatment from the perspective of nutritional science.

In our Graduate School, our faculty of experienced nutritionists and doctors give lectures and lab seminars that provide our graduate students with the knowledge and experience to pursue their own research.

We also train our graduate students to be able to move onto doctoral work and become professional researchers in health management. We aspire to become a center for health research where we can learn from each other and work together.

Dean, Katsusuke Yano

Characteristics and Methods of Our Research

Curriculum Structure and Characteristics

The Department has designed its curriculum in light of current and future demands in our field. Classes deal with topics judged to be of special importance. To gain practical and specialized knowledge, case studies are analyzed and discussed thoroughly. Faculty lectures complement and expand students' knowledge and skills. In our "Special Research" class, students are able to compile the necessary data for their thesis.

Research Methods and Characteristics

It's very important to plan research from a practical perspective. Our graduate students' research addresses issues within the local community and is adopted by professionals in the field. Graduate students receive support from the University through access to on campus resources such as laboratories, computer facilities and the library.

Class Guidance

Concrete Guidance Methods

  1. Class guidance begins after entering school. Students submit research proposals, select classes and choose their advisors.
  2. Upon choosing an advisor, students work with this person throughout the course of study until the completion of their thesis.

Thesis Guidance

  1. In the first year students take five out of 10 required credits in special research and then determine the topic for their master's thesis. Plus, students gain knowledge and skills appropriate to conducting research.
  2. In the second year students take the remaining five credits of special research and complete their master's thesis or research report (mentioned below).

Requirements for completion

Students must complete 30 credits consisting of 10 credits of required special research, four elective credits (one course), and at least 16 credits of advanced courses. In addition, students must pass an oral defense and final exam related to their master's thesis. Those who complete these requirements will be awarded a Master of Science in Health Management.

Students conduct special research and write their thesis under the guidance of their supervisor.

Offering Education for Professionals

The Graduate School of Health Management willingly grants entrance to ambitious professionals from both government and industry. The reasons for recruiting professionals are: 1) these professionals are required to acquire further training for professional development. 2) our specialty is contributing to society.

Day and Nighttime Classes

In accordance with relevant legislation concerning professional development we offer classes at times which are convenient for working professionals. Special class times are: 6:10-7:40, 7:50-9:20, plus Saturdays.

Alternative Requirements

Since professionals have relevant experience it is not always necessary to write a thesis to graduate. Instead they can submit research reports on their own experience and interests in place of a master's thesis. Details of each student's requirements will be determined by the faculty.
