Department of International Tourism/Department of Social Work, Faculty of Human and Social Studies
- First Year Admission (Four-year course)
Applicants of foreign nationality must possess Level N2 or higher of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) administered by the Japan Educational Exchanges and Services (JEES). They must also have completed or expect to complete twelve years of formal education in foreign countries or have equivalent skills and be appointed by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. - Two-year Admission (Three-year course)
*Examination for Two-year Admission is conducted when the student enrollment capacity is not filled.
Applicants of foreign nationality must possess Level N2 or higher of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) administered by Japan Educational Exchanges and Services (JEES). They must also have completed or expect to complete fourteen years of formal education in foreign countries. Alternatively, students who have attended at least one year in a four-year college (excluding any period of a leave of absence from college) and acquired or expect to acquire the number of credits designated by NIU. - Third Year Admission (Two-year course)
Applicants of foreign nationality must possess Level N2 or higher of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) administered by Japan Educational Exchanges and Services (JEES). They must also have completed or expect to complete fourteen years of formal education in foreign countries. Alternatively, students who have attended at least two years in a four-year college (excluding any period of a leave of absence from college) and acquired or expect to acquire the number of credits designated by NIU.
Graduate School
Master’s Course in Tourism/Master’s Course in Social Work, Graduate School of Human and Social Studies (Master’s Course: 2 years)
Applicants who do not have Japanese nationality and permanent resident status must satisfy any of the following requirements (1) to (6).
- Those who have graduated or are expected to graduate from a Japanese university.
- Those who have been awarded or are expected to be awarded a bachelor’s degree pursuant to Article 104, Paragraph 4 of the School Education Law.
- Those who have completed or are expected to complete 16 years of school education in a foreign country.
- Those who, by studying relevant subjects in Japan via a correspondence course provided by a school in a foreign country, have completed or are expected to complete 16 years of school education in said country.
- Those who have completed an advanced professional course at a higher vocational school (only schools that meet standards stipulated by the Minister, such as requirement of 4 or more years for graduation), designated by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology on and after the date specified by the said Minister;
- Those who have been designated by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology.
Doctoral Course in Regional Management, Graduate School of Human and Social Studies (Doctoral Course: 3 years)
Applicants who do not have Japanese nationality and permanent resident status must satisfy any of the following requirements (1) to (5).
- Those who have earned or are expected to earn a master’s degree or a professional degree pursuant to Article 99, Paragraph 2 of the School Education Law.
- Those who have been awarded or are expected to be awarded a master’s degree pursuant to Article 104, Paragraph 4 of the School Education Law.
- Those who have earned or are expected to earn a degree equivalent to a master's degree or a professional degree in a foreign country.
- Those who have earned or are expected to earn a degree equivalent to a master's degree or a professional degree by studying relevant subjects in Japan via a correspondence course provided by a school in a foreign country.
- Those who have been designated by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology.

Department of International Tourism/Department of Social Work, Faculty of Human and Social Studies
- First Year Admission (Four-year course)
Admission decisions will be made by overall assessment on the Japanese ability test (equivalent to Level N2), interviews, and application documents. However, those who possess Level N1 or N2 of the JLPT administered by JEES or those who have a score of 200 or more (including the writing test) on the Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students (EJU) administered by the Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO) are exempt from taking the Japanese ability test by sending a copy of the written notice of the results (notice with records). (In this case, applicants will interview only for the application.) - Two-year Admission (Three-year course) and Third Year Admission (Two-year course)
Admission decisions will be made by overall assessment on an essay (800 letters; the topic will be related to the special field of study in terms of both departments), interview, and application documents.
* Examination for Two-year Admission is conducted when the student enrollment capacity is not filled.

Examination Fee

The application fee shall be 10,000 yen. The application fee cannot be refunded.
Graduate School
The application fee shall be 30,000 yen. The application fee cannot be refunded.
Tuition Reduction System for Self-Financed International Students
Faculty
Tuition reduction system is offered to self-financed international students as shown below.

* The registration fee is required only in the first year upon entrance.
* In addition to the above-mentioned amount, the student support fee is required during the entrance procedure.
For the amount in academic year 2020, the fee to transfer to the third year is 42,560 yen, the fee to transfer to the second year is 52,400 yen, and the admission fee for the first year is 72,070 yen.
The breakdown of the student support and other fees is 12,000 yen for the student support fee, 8,000 yen for the reunion fee, and the rest is the personal accident/property damage/student life comprehensive insurance premiums.

No exemption of tuition fees is available.

* Enrollment fees are required only for the enrollment year. Tuition fees should be paid for two years for masters’ courses and three years for a doctoral course.

Entrance Examination for Applicants of Foreign Nationality Who Have Taken the Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students (EJU)

Requirements
Applicants of foreign nationality who fall under any of the following and can promise not to smoke after being admitted to NIU:
- Applicants who have completed or expect to complete twelve years of formal education in foreign countries or have equivalent abilities and have been appointed by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology.
- Applicants who have a score of 200 or more (excluding points on the writing test) of the Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students (EJU) administered by the Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO) or possess Level N2 or higher of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) administered by Japan Educational Exchanges and Services (JEES).
- Applicants who have a total score on the three subjects of the Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students (EJU) (scores of the two subjects of science are converted to a maximum of 200 points, respectively) of 420 points or more out of a maximum of 600.
Application Acceptances
Admission decisions will be made by overall assessment of the results of the three subjects of the Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students (EJU) (scores of the two subjects of science are converted to a maximum of 200 points, respectively), application documents, such as the reason for application, and interviews. In addition, the interview will be based on application documents and last about 40 minutes per applicant.

Entrance examination fee
The entrance examination fee is 10,000 yen. In addition, the examination entrance fee is not refundable.
Tuition Reduction System for Self-Financed International Students in the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences
For self-financed international students in the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Science, NIU implements the tuition reduction system according to the results of the examinations as follows:
